The 4th Floor plot

"People are dying to live in this building."

Rather than move in with her boyfriend Greg (William Hurt), Jane Emelin (Juliette Lewis) decides to move into the apartment she inherited from her aunt. But soon Jane finds herself in all kinds of unpleasant situations. In the apartment building opposite her, a man seems to want to kill a woman, but before she can see what exactly happened, he closes the curtains. One day when her lock is broken, Jane finds out that the locksmith is the same neighbor across the street, who also appears to have keys to all the apartments in the building. Then there is Jane's downstairs neighbor Alice, who complains every day about noise pollution. After a heated argument, her apartment is suddenly full of mice and caterpillars. Because Alice never opens the door, Jane breaks into her house and gets the fright of her life.

Extremely weak suspense thriller, with shouty and mediocre acting, irritating, clichéd characters, predictable plot and fatally boring and perfunctory camerawork and editing. Any inventiveness is lacking.

Reasonably successful thriller with enough suspense to keep you exciting for a long time.

The lighting and camera work create such a dark atmosphere in the complex that I had already packed my things. Add to that a number of eccentric fellow residents and the setting for a strong thriller is complete.

For a long time I found the story interesting and the tension around apartment 4 is slowly increasing. Even after Emelin has been in the room, the question remains who lives there now. Due to the many suspicious characters, this is not immediately obvious.
Unfortunately, the ending with a twist is a bit quick and messy and does not get the ending I had hoped for.

Lewis plays a fairly strong role with, as always in these types of films, some stupid actions. In addition to Hurt, Bell (Saw) and Duvall (Shining) also play a small but nice role.

Great film with a good atmosphere that does have some flaws but remains entertaining despite that.

3*

Not really a tactical choice by the makers to give Jane a friend. This way it is immediately a lot less intense and claustrophobic; after all, their relationship was still intact and she could return to the safety of the country house at any time. I would have preferred to see a single woman with a little more insecurity. Regardless of an invisible enemy, she now seemed quite on her guard and not to be messed with. On the other hand, it's also nice, a lady who doesn't immediately burst into tears, but the feeling that is usually evoked in you in a horror was, roughly speaking, omitted here. That 'trap room' in the final phase was also disappointing (there was not much more than a pile of Styrofoam and she could simply pick up a weapon from the ground). By the way, in the last shot we see a painting of The Lock Smith where Greg and Mr. Collins are depicted and this leaves you with questions (positive).
