Ransom plot
"Someone is going to pay."
The son of Tom Mullen, a wealthy airline owner, is kidnapped. He is willing to pay the 2 million ransom, but something goes wrong while handing over the money. Tom decides to turn the ransom into a reward for anyone who finds the kidnappers.

Well, the story is pretty unbelievable, and there are definitely some weak moments in it. But Gibson has some strong scenes and overall enough. *3.0

Ransom is not a normal kidnap out there people who seem to be in control get pretty cheated. Mel Gibson is very established in his role and this also makes the story very believable. I do think that the film could have been even better if the long running time was shortened a bit. This does not take away from the fact that every minute is enjoyable, because the pace is good.

Quite a decent film that is more drama with a few very well constructed moments than a crime/thriller or action film.
A fairly standard image arises in that sense of a kidnap for a lot of money. What immediately stands out is the fact that an agent is in control and with that things are reasonably in order. However, it is Tom who then turns the matter around and in such a way that one does not know what to do anymore. Although unlikely, it is a very interesting plot change that turns the world upside down.
The atmosphere is built up very well in certain areas by Howard. The disappearance and increasing stress of father and mother is quite striking, as is the heated telephone conversation between Tom and the perpetrator is very good and the recognition and reaction of the boy at the end is also nicely constructed. However, a script error, if Sean recognizes Jimmy's voice at their home why doesn't he when the police come in? Jimmy is actually sitting next to Sean's bed when the police come in.
Ransom isn't all that great, but something else in the kidnap world is. Gibson is good, but especially Sinise asserts himself in a role that is not usual for him. In addition, Howard has a number of moments where he builds up more than great atmosphere and tension, something that I would have allowed him to maintain throughout the entire length of the film because it now leans a bit too much towards a family drama. Then the soundtrack, which is quite des Horners with its glockenspiel and sounds that are reminiscent of The Fugitive, yet the recurring element with a number of touches on a piano with a dark sound is very special and beautiful.
Ransom, not top notch, but very solid. And above all a very good film.
