Story is set in Greece during the colonels' regime (1967-1974), although it is rather vague about it. Maybe because the Colonels were gone when the movie was made, but their ghosts still haunted. Possibly also because the original story took place in the thirties when Greece was already suffering from a military dictatorship, that of Metaxas. And they are all the same: civil liberties are abolished, the rule of law is abolished, and the secret services have free rein to apprehend "subversives," whatever they may be. Likewise here.

A seemingly peaceful citizen (Hugo Tognazzi) is apprehended and must be taken to the capital for questioning by a cop (Michel Piccoli) and his violent aide. During that trip, quite a few things go wrong and a kind of cat and mouse game ensues between the suspect and the officer. The violent denouement follows in the capital. It all sounds a bit more exciting than it is and it's a pity that the synopsis gives too much away here. Nice to look at those two acting guns (Tognazzi and Piccoli) of that time. That never gets boring.
