In the Company of Darkness plot
After the young police officer Gina Pulasky manages a marital spat, she joins a small group of detectives and cops who are after a child killer who has had the city in its grip for some time. She goes undercover, much to the dismay of fellow cop and her friend Will, and tries to befriend the killer, the highly intelligent but deranged Kyle Timler. They spend a lot of time together, and Gina learns more and more about Kyle's background and his crimes. But Gina notices that she shares many similarities with Kyle, and she is haunted by secrets from her own unprocessed dark past.
