Het Diner plot

Two couples go out for dinner one night in a restaurant. They talk about everyday things, things people talk about at dinner parties: work, the latest movies, the war in Iraq, vacation plans, et cetera. But in the meantime, they avoid what they should be talking about: their children. The two fifteen-year-old sons of both couples, Michel and Rick, have done something together that could destroy their future. So far, only vague images of the two have been requested in Opsporing and the investigation into their identities is stuck. But how much longer? Two men, two women, two sons – who dares to make a decision about the future of their own child? What makes it even more complicated is that the father of one of the boys is the intended new Prime Minister of the Netherlands.

I found the book interesting, especially the abrasive cynicism of Herman Koch appealed to me, but unfortunately the film never reaches the level of the book. The scenes with the waiter in his green suit come close, but otherwise it is mostly lifeless and uninspired.

Unfamiliar with the book, so no frame of reference in that sense at all.

At first I was not very interested in the storytelling style and it was just a question of where it was not going now. The eventual discussion about what happened and how to act is interesting in itself, after which the situation derails a bit towards the realistic.

I didn't think it was that bad, but other than that it didn't do much for me. Reuten and Van Kooten are still nice to see, but quickly on to the next one.
