Birthrite plot

When Elizabeth Alexander is sent out after a severe storm to assess the damage of an insured, she doesn't know yet that this ride will completely change her life. After losing her way, she gets stuck with her car. There she soon befriends the somewhat 'simple' Charley Aycock and she believes that she will soon be able to continue her journey. Mother Aycock raised her retarded son Charley on the banks of the Cache River. They live off the traps Charley sets and his catch of fish. But his mother is very concerned. She's getting older by the day and there's no one to look after Charley when she's gone. And there is also the birthright, which stipulates that their home must always be passed on to an Aycock for the next four generations. And Charley has neither wife nor children. That's why mom thinks her Charley would be a perfect match for Elizabeth, because she's young and beautiful after all.
