Strong film with a solid cast. The biggest downside is perhaps some superfluous scenes such as the phone conversations Cage has with his wife, love you, yeah love you too, blablabla Otherwise a nice neo noir atmosphere with sometimes quite harsh images. In my opinion, Cage is playing one of the best roles of his life here and also one of his better movies. A must see in this genre.

A great thriller that sets the mood well, especially in the first part. I was immediately thinking of Seven's slums, or Buffalo Bill's filthy house from Silence of the lambs. Like these 90s thrillers, 8mm is set in the dark underworld of the big city, where most people will never set foot. And for good reasons. The perverted world of violent porn presented to us here is sick, and makes you wonder how people can get to these acts. Nicolas Cage also has these questions but, like the viewer, finds no answers to them. The dingy atmosphere is well portrayed with dark bars and strange characters.
In the second part of the film, the tension decreases a bit. With atmospheres like this, it's always the most creepy when everything remains mysterious. When it becomes clear how everything works, the truth is shocking, but not so exciting anymore. The fact that Cage himself chooses the evil path at the end makes it all a bit over the top. That he would lose his soul was long predicted by his colleague Phoenix and then came not much of a surprise either.
The dramatic scenes with his wife and child add little to the film, and could perhaps have been made stronger to make the contrast between the 'normal' world and the shadowy underworld even greater. Nevertheless, a nasty, but fine film to have seen.

3*

Good film in which a private detective is tasked by a wealthy widow to find out if a snuff film is authentic. An entertaining quest into the sleazy underworld of extreme (porn) movies. And this dark world is well portrayed here. Some characters are a bit over the top, but the cast gets away with it.
