With a premise where a pill can express people's superpowers for 5 minutes, you would expect to watch an exciting and spectacular movie. Unfortunately, everything is packaged in such a standard story that this whole concept is hardly used, or at least not well used. This "renegade trying to free his kidnapped daughter from the clutches of some bad guys" story has been performed many times before and only this little pill brings some innovation, but it's not enough to make it a compelling film.

The directors are clearly adept at their craft and visually the film is beautiful, except that hip hop soundtrack didn't do anything for me. However, the action is unfortunately sometimes very sloppy edited. I don't think this is up to the directors, but that it comes from above. One moment you're watching gory action and the next the camera is swung the other way at the crucial moments and the CGI is sometimes not very convincing. The film is inconsistent in that regard, while it absolutely shouldn't have been.

At times a very frustrating seat. Not because the film is bad, but more because the interesting concept could have been replaced by any other drug and you would still have been watching the same film in the main. Easy and entertaining to watch, but the potency is not realized.

2.5*

Just not again. Joost and Schulman again put a big bowl of neon on it and let the camera spin around as if their lives depended on it, but it all dries up prematurely. It starts strong though; the concept of the pill (just like the premise in Nerve) has a lot of potential in the base and turns out - unsurprisingly - to work best when we actually see it in action. When it turns out to be no more than a 13 in a dozen crime/thriller plot with a funny gimmick (the pill), it disappoints. Few scenes that really stand out, but a couple that should have, but because of blunt cuts (a lot has to be created in the editing, the action rarely speaks for itself) and striking CGI (scene in the 'tank'. ..) that doesn't happen. With Foxx and Levitt you have two names that can carry it all just fine, Fishback fell short. As well as her character; young black woman who can rap, but is systematically suppressed. That's boring racial politics that I don't like in simple popcorn entertainment.
