Richmond, Virginia, 1865. During the American Civil War, Captain Cyrus Harding is a prisoner of the Confederates. Harding escapes in a Union balloon, along with war correspondent Gideon Spilett, sailor Jack Pencroft, his adopted son Herbert 'Bert' Brown and Harding's black butler Neb. The balloon eventually lands on a remote island after a storm. Ruru lands on this island with a spaceship. Ruru, who comes from the planet Mercury, searches Earth for radioactive material, which she needs for world domination. The stranded party must battle not only the alien Ruru and her henchmen, but also the Volcano tribe and pirates led by Captain Shard, who visit the island. However, they can count on the support of the mysterious Captain Nemo, who occasionally visits the island with his submarine.
