During a typical night in the Scottish Highlands, Air Force Lieutenant Chris Drake shoots down an unidentifiable flying object. But the consequences of this act are unprecedented. At the same time, Dr. Amanda Tucker and her assistant Nick Shay survey the skies with the aim of detecting intelligent forms of communication. However, they detected much more than they had hoped. The search for the downed plane leads to the discovery of Lieutenant Charles Terrell, an army officer who disappeared in 1945. After some reluctance, Lieutenant Terrell tells the story of the peaceful Echoes, who kidnapped him years ago. There is also talk of an ancient, ruthless enemy, the nDs, who seek to enslave the Echoes for their own evil purposes. When the observations of Dr. Tucker's discovery of alien spaceships also reveals the horrifying prospect that an invasion of Earth is imminent.
