Tatyana Sergeyevna (Nina Ivanova) is a Russian literature teacher who is on her way to an industrial town to teach an evening school for workers from the nearby factory. Her class includes Sasha Savchenko (Nikolai Rybnikov), who falls hopelessly in love with Tatyana. However, she does not seem to heed Sasha's attempts to declare his love to her, and she becomes distant towards Sasha, her class and her surroundings. Sasha's friend Zina (Valentina Pugachyova) rents a room to Tatyana and soon notices Sasha's interest in Tatyana, which inevitably leads to intense jealousy in Zina. Will Sasha still manage to win over Tatyana?
