After watching Kal Ho Naa Ho, I can think of many reasons why the film wouldn't work. The grandiose overacting, the extreme sentimentality or the hustle and bustle that hurts the eyes at times. And yet despite, or perhaps because of, all its flaws, this film thoroughly entertained me.
The simple but effective story works very well. The acting of the leading actors is very good, the music is easy to listen to and the film succeeds in achieving its goal, albeit not very subtly. One moment Kal Ho Naa Ho is moving and the next it gives you a wonderful feel-good feeling.
Therefore, for the three hours of exceptionally pleasant entertainment, a big four.

A beautiful film that has everything in it. A fast-paced story is told at breakneck speed, full of romance, drama, humor and compelling music. And as an extra dessert, beautiful ballets, somewhat reminiscent of the mass productions of Busby Berkeley from the 1930s.
Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta all deliver excellent performances. Preity Zinta also looks very good. It's certainly not a punishment to have to watch that for three hours.
After the hilarious 3 Idiots (also highly recommended!), this is the second Bollywood film that I have seen in a short time. It certainly won't be my last, because the two I've seen now just leave me wanting more.
Real craftsmanship that provides three hours of excellent entertainment, making the time fly by.

India meets New York. Is a true Bollywood: long film, colorful, musical every half hour and lots of overacting. Especially during the singing and dancing, the actors behave in overdrive with voices and moves that do not suit them. But I do love this genre every now and then. And this film is a winner in its genre. OK, I'm not a fan of the overacting, but otherwise it moved me. Consider the first half (so 1.5 hours) as an introduction and the second half as the film itself. So just have a bit of a hectic bite and then enjoy. Ended emotionally. Film is about a love story with some triangular twist. Watch to understand. Don't give any spoilers here. You have to be open to culture and genre film. It's really something special. I really like the traditional costume.
Lead actress Preity Zinta is a delight to behold and it surprises me that she is not known in Hollywood. Perhaps a conscious choice because of language or perhaps India is sufficient, but can place itself in the film world. Top actress. Enjoyed movie. Beautiful love story. Tears and laughter. 4*
