Colonel Barkley is very proud of his assistant, Sergeant Doubleday, who has a photographic memory. Doubleday demonstrates his book knowledge of firearms during a lesson with Sergeant Ames, causing the latter to feel embarrassed. Due to a series of misunderstandings, Colonel Barkley believes that the shy Doubleday is an expert in marksmanship, which is not the case, and he enters him in a shooting competition against Ames and Sergeant Cobb.
