During the Korean War, military nurse and idealist Lieutenant Ruth McGara is assigned to a unit of the 'MASH' (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), near the front line. There she meets Major Jed Webbe, who falls in love with her, but she rejects him. Webbe, who is in command of the MASH team of surgeons, is a pushy type and seems to be only interested in momentary pleasures. Despite having opposing characters, McGara eventually falls in love with Webbe. Their love blossoms amid the sheer number of casualties, the threats from the North Koreans, the harsh weather conditions and the emergency evacuations, which at the same time test the MASH unit.
