A strange video.

I liked Flan and Ouisa's stories to their rich friends the most.

The strange happenings and Paul's dizzying, endless babbling weren't my thing.

A bit more clarity at the end would have been nice.

Very well acted, no doubt about it, but a bit too theatrical... and I hate theatre.

2.5 stars

And that's where the film went a bit over the top for us, the chatter and the know-it-all attitude, the slimy approach of this Paul (and also of the others), we found a bit too much. Still, apart from that, a beautiful film that you really should have seen as a film lover in this genre. A generous 7.5!

I wanted to see this film because of the theory behind Six Degrees of Separation, but it was only mentioned in passing.
It turned out to be a stage adaptation, which I don't mind in itself, but it did have a high elitist quality because of the game 'how many references to other cultures can we put in that the audience will recognize, and which will make the writer and the audience appear very smart'. Harry Mulisch has a knack for that too. As a play itself, there were no real plot twists that would turn the whole thing upside down, it all just kind of meandered and didn't really invite me to sit on the edge of my seat.
It all seems a bit dated, these fairly classical views of art that were still common in the early 90s, but also because of the romantic idea of the brilliant but troubled or insane hero who has too beautiful a soul to handle everyday life.
The ideas in this film are much more strongly broken down in other films: entering a family as a stranger only based on references from third parties is much more oppressively portrayed in Funny Games (1997) - MovieMeter.nl, and adopting another personality to fit seamlessly into high society is more beautifully done in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) - MovieMeter.nl.
I do understand why Smith was chosen (fresh young actor to give such an old-fashioned stage performance a modern image) and also why Smith chose this film (look, I can do more than just Fresh Prince). And admittedly, he gets away with it pretty well... but not completely. Because he doesn't touch, he doesn't get inside, and he has to, given his role.
Still, it's all quite amusing, but it's more Woody Allen-amusing.
