Jacques Rivette's debut film from the heyday of the French New Wave.

Fortunately, the film does have an actual plot and is reminiscent of other classics from this era, notably Ascenseur pour l'Échafaud and L'Avventura, and also with some quotes from Kiss Me Deadly.

Naturally, we take all sorts of side roads through the plot because there is some philosophizing to be done (preferably with a pipe in our mouth).

Pre-Beatnik Paris captured in stunning black and white images and, like Rivette's best work, a sort of labyrinthine plot that ultimately culminates in a downright thriller ending.

Masterpiece!

Nouvelle vague with a rather dark plot. The characters never provide proper explanations, and it all seems to me to be more psychological than the actual investigations, interrogations, arrests, etc.

So, it's hard to judge. Of the actors, I only know Jean-Claude Brialy, and he plays his favorite role: snob.

The film is far too long and features too much nonsense that's not always captivating. It's atmospheric at times, and Paris comes across beautifully (but also darkly, a welcome change), but the film often failed to hold my interest. I could watch Betty Schneider for hours; she truly had a certain charisma that remains captivating. 2.0*.
