Richard Burton received the first of 7 (!) Oscar nominations for his Hollywood debut, based on the book of the same name by Daphne Du Maurier. He plays the role of Philip, who was raised as an orphan by Ambrose Ashley [John Sutton], a wealthy man without children. When Ambrose falls ill, he leaves for Italy on the advice of his doctor to recover there. In letters he informs Philip that he has met Rachel [Olivia de Havilland] and later it turns out that he has even married her. After that, Ambrose's health quickly goes downhill and he dies. Rachel travels to Cornwall to mourn with Philip, but Philip seriously doubts her sincerity. Could she have poisoned Ambrose to be able to claim his wealth?

Melodrama par excellence with a well-cast De Havilland in the title role. The combination of her friendly face, her dubious actions and a close friendship with the slippery Guido Ranaldi [George Dolenz], makes you as a viewer with Burton always doubt her intentions. It is a captivating mystery and the neat sets, as well as the romantic score by Franz Waxman, make this a must for lovers of old-fashioned Hollywood melodrama.

Like Rebecca (1940) this is based on a book by Daphne du Maurier. It is again a gothic mystery with a dose of romance. Olivia de Havilland plays the black widow; Richard Burton the heir who lets his head go wild. She throws all her charms into the balance; he walks around feverishly.

In the background you can see the nature of Cornwall. Inside there is a sinister atmosphere, with candlelight and antique curtains. Costumes and jewelry are beautiful. The music of Franz Waxman adds some melodrama.

good romantic melodrama with all the elements, costumes, sets and good acting in it, as well as an intriguing plot to keep it interesting.

the only thing that really bothered me was how quickly philip changes from a cold man bent on revenge to a docile sheep in love, the transition is just too abrupt to be even remotely believable.

Actually, too little time is spent to make the characters and their romance somewhat believable.

With 15 or 20 minutes more this could have been a much better film.
