"A mystery of the heart."

Maurice and Ida Stubbs are two elderly people who form a couple and live in a remote rural village. The couple has lost a child in the past and is still grieving about it. One of their neighbors is Ronnie, a young woman who is six months pregnant and has been abandoned by her boyfriend. Then there's local resident Laurie, a lonely failure. When animals are being slaughtered in the area for unknown reasons, fear brings the four together.
