In the Steps of a Dead Man plot
George and Betty Cornfield's only son Tommy is killed in combat in the military, causing their lives to collapse and George into a deep depression. One day, however, a soldier named Marty shows up on the doorstep who claims to have been Tommy's best friend in the service and reassures the grieving parents about their son's last minutes of life. Marty is so similar to their son Tommy that they almost come to think of him as such and they even introduce him to Tommy's fiancée Sheila. Soon the two seem destined to tie the knot, but Sheila's friend Grace doesn't trust Marty and investigates.
