The wealthy widow and chronically ill Mme. Harlowe has been poisoned. A book from her library at Maison Grenelle states that a certain deadly native poison leaves no trace. Not trusting the cause of death, Parisian police inspector Hanaud travels to 'Maison Grenelle' in Dijon to solve the mystery. He speaks to Betty Harlowe, Mme's niece. harlowe. She turns out to be the prime suspect of the local police.
