Romanticized life story of Jerome Kern, one of the top performers in the musical world.

I think it was quite successful, plus the songs and the then-stars who belong to my world.

A young Sinatra singing "'Ol Man River", isn't it special?

Historically all quite apocryphal, but still worth it for the stars, the songs and the Hollywood expertise. The younger viewers among us may only notice an extremely youthful Frank Sinatra (with sky-high hair), Judy Garland (here just pregnant with Liza) and Angela Lansbury (38 years before she started Murder, she wrote) still recognize it, but those who are a little older will see a procession of famous musical stars passing by. The highlight for me was Lena Horne with Can't help lovin' dat man, also immediately followed by the brilliant Ol' man river in Caleb Peterson's version. Did I mention that there are some nice songs in here too? (Oh yes, the DVD version with two films on one DVD that J.Bell mentions in the first message can still be found.)

A bit long.

The film wants to be a (romanticized) biography on the one hand, and a best of numbers on the other. And above all, don't skimp on both elements. So you get a film of over two hours that gets quite boring after a while.

The songs at the end in particular, although useful for context (especially if you don't know Kern), are quite long. It might be nice to see Sinatra again, but at that moment it was mainly a countdown to the end.

Kern's story is also not very exciting. Everything actually runs quite smoothly and it is the people around him who sometimes have a more difficult time. It is a very happy film for a biography, but then again it belongs to the showbiz genre.

Many familiar faces, also many well-known songs, with Smoke Gets in Your Eyes probably being the most pop-sensitive (and also the song that has survived the times best - in several versions). Not a bad musical per se, a typical product of its time, but it lasts far, far too long.

1.0*
