The Duke Is Tops plot

Duke Davis (Ralph Cooper) has put all his savings into a show for his beloved Ethel Andrews (Lena Horne). They are both artists and have been working together since childhood. George Marshall (Monte Hawley), who is looking for new talent, makes Ethel an offer. Wanting her to take this opportunity, Duke writes a fake check to himself, making it look like he's been bribed. Ethel accepts Marshall's proposal, but with a broken heart, because she believes Duke has betrayed and sold her.
