A few years after The Sound of Music, Robert Wise and co wanted to make a sequel to this, but with considerably less success as it became a complete box office flop. This is a biopic depicting the life of British actress Gertrude Lawrence. However, bopics are always a difficult task for me, especially when it is spread over decades. Then you get a series of vignettes without much common thread. Or let's just say that you shouldn't watch it for a specific plot because it all develops over long periods of time. That is also the case here. So it didn't bother me. Despite the fact that money and care has clearly been spent on the production with historical sets and costuming and such things. However, it all remained too much of a distance. Just like the movie within the movie that happened. It also lasts far too long and has songs that don't stick around. Then of course not much will be left standing. The only interesting thing I found was the role of Noël Coward, played by Daniel Massey.
