Tsar Peter the Great's sensitive and intellectual black Ethiopian servant Hannibal (Vladimir Vysotsky) is in love, but doesn't dare approach the lady in question. Growing up at the Russian court, he is in a privileged position and can talk freely about various matters. Though the Tsar is busy with other plans, he still takes the time to engage in his servant's love affairs, and tries to prod him into an arranged marriage.
