Rigoletto plot
During a feast at the Duke of Mantua's palace, the Count of Monterone invades and accuses the Duke of dishonoring his daughter. The jester Rigoletto makes fun of the count, who curses both the duke and the jester. Rigoletto is horrified and flees the palace. On his way home, he encounters Sparafucile, a hit man, who offers him his services. The jester refuses this for the moment, and enters his house where his daughter Gilda is waiting for him. He tells her not to go out on the street. She promises this, but does not say that she met an attractive young man in church. This is the Duke who came to her house that evening, and discovers that the beautiful girl is Rigoletto's daughter. In the street, Rigoletto encounters a couple of courtiers who tell him that they are going to kidnap the Countess of Ceprano, but in reality they want to kidnap Rigoletto's supposed sweetheart. The jester falls for it and says he will help. They then blindfold him, and when he finds out he has been cheated, Gilda is kidnapped. The curse starts to work...
