Jerry, the manager of a Broadway musical revue, is doing tryouts in Milbank, New Jersey. He is plagued by the staggering costs and complaints of unpaid workers such as young Harold, who insists his mother needs money, Bert, who complains that he hasn't had a decent meal in a week, and star Nita, who winds up about $400 in back pay.
