Very solid.

McKee has to rely mainly on the atmosphere. Very skillfully dressed, Clarkson plays well and the visual is also nicely finished. It makes a fine thriller/horror of what is otherwise a succession of clichés.

Campbell is a striking figure, I could hardly get rid of the impression that McKee deliberately wanted to make the link to Evil Dead, especially because during the climax the living branches play a very large role. His role is not much more than that.

Atmosphere in the boarding school is finely created, finished down to the last detail. The "scares" are a bit tame, the horror isn't exactly top-notch either, but there's quite a bit of tension in the film. The ending is classy rather than scary, but this film gets away with it too.

McKee is a good director, that much is clear. Not his best, but good horror food for hungry fans.

It's not all that high-quality and there's nothing really surprising in it, but this fairly unknown horror film is certainly not bad (seen on MGM). The performance is quite beautiful (nice 60s atmosphere and appearance and ditto music) and here and there there are some nice horror moments. The story is also captivating, although it is never exciting. The cast does a decent job, especially Patricia Clarkson. That mister Evil Dead Bruce Campbell also plays a part in this is of course funny. All in all, this is quite a nice horror that looks away nicely and never gets really annoying.

Nicely atmospheric and mysterious, but McKee often doesn't know which way to go. On the one hand, that is precisely the strength of the film, but I never really got good at it because of it. Visually this is also a pleasure and Bruce Campbell is always nice, although his role is very small.

3*
