I'm a huge Full Moon fan (Puppet Master ), but despite the great cast, Gordon misses the mark with this film adaptation of the classic Poe story.

"I swear by all the saints I'm not a witch."

Great acting in this film by Stuart Gordon. Lance Henriksen plays a masterful Torquemada and Jeffrey Combs also makes a brief appearance as Francisco. Oliver Reed was also funny as the Cardinal.

The setting is layered, the costumes look good and the film is even fairly historically accurate if I'm not mistaken. The film immediately starts quite strong and has a good atmosphere. Still, I thought that the castle and especially the well with the pendulum could have been a bit more atmospheric, in the earlier film with Vincent Price, for example, that was done a little better.

Very good music from Richard Band. Gives a nice dark atmosphere. Especially the choirs and Gregorian chants that are incorporated in it were very beautiful.

The make-up, gore and special effects are all well done. And the movie is well shot. The ending could have been a bit more climax, but still, a strong story.

I am Catholic myself and I thought it was good that Gordon showed in this film that the Catholic Church did not agree with the Inquisition, unfortunately the truth is different. The pope even commissioned it in 1487.

Originally, Peter O'Toole, Sherilyn Fenn and Billy Dee Williams were supposed to star in this movie (that would be something).

All in all a very entertaining movie.

This film based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe is not a remake of Roger Corman's solid 1961 The Pit and the Pendulum. Both are completely different films in terms of execution. Stuart Gordon knows how to get the viewer into the world of the Spanish Inquisition, in which gruesome torture and the powerlessness of the people are central. The director knows how to perfectly combine the gore, the oppression, the torture, the despair with a touch of nudity and fantasy. Lance Henriksen is outstanding as Torquemada, an unparalleled role. The beautiful Rona De Ricci as Maria plays her role convincingly. Great movie! 7/10
