Poor werewolf movie. Some great special effects scenes add to the initially clumsy level of this film. It is also a film that gets boring because of the slow build-up. After an hour I still had the feeling that hardly anything had happened except ticking off the werewolf facts factsheet. Actors not impressive either. Landis is imo the only one who could capture the atmosphere of a real werewolf movie. This one is a bit .... to cry ... woooooow!

poor.

The werewolf genre is not my favorite niche anyway, the advantage with this film is that you get a half hour delay. Not that the surprise afterwards is very big, the title and poster already give away enough, but the first part was a bit better than I expected. Still visually meager and poorly acted, but the stalker scene in the beginning had some atmosphere.

After that it slides off pretty quickly. The werewolves look ridiculous, the effects unsightly at times (that shot in front of the campfire, wtf...) and the "crazy" characters aren't fun at all. The only thing that adds a bit of atmosphere are the nighttime shots of the woods, but that's not exactly enough for a successful horror film.

Plotje doesn't offer too much either, I didn't really expect it beforehand, although it is even more disappointing due to the solid first part. Oh well, I rarely find old Dantes interesting, so it's not all that surprising. A movie to quickly forget.

1.5*

Moderate Dante.

As a director he certainly has some nicer titles to his name, The Howling is unfortunately not an example of that. It took me a long time to see this relatively well-known horror film, which certainly has its advantages, but is generally a big miss. It's a shame, though, because I was looking forward to it beforehand.

However, the film has the disadvantage that I am not a fan of werewolves, I usually think they are just clumsy horror creatures that are rarely convincingly portrayed in these kinds of films. There is little tension, and often there is a lack of atmosphere in these kinds of films. The Howling certainly lacks atmosphere, which makes this a tough session.

The acting can be called mediocre, and despite the fact that there are a number of strange guys walking around between the characters, few really know how to captivate. I can call them special, but there is still a lack of acting talent here and that is a shame. The only one that stood out to me was Brooks, but she doesn't get much screen time.

The story is fairly vague and strange, but I can still appreciate that in these kinds of films. The werewolf genre is very chewed up, and then I don't mind if a different direction is chosen. However, I found the direction this film takes to be silly and that doesn't make it more interesting as a whole. Unfortunately.

All in all I thought this was a disappointing, somewhat boring film with a very cool transformation. In terms of cinematography, the film is also nicely completed, because visually the film has a number of nice colors, but otherwise I can praise the film on little. Sad, but not entirely unexpected. Hopefully Leigh Whannell can breathe new life into the genre this or next year.
