Caitlin [Mary Elizabeth Winstead], a mother with a history of mental health issues, is persuaded to entrust a significant portion of her children's care to a babysitter [Maika Monroe]. Through manipulation, she tries to create rifts in Caitlin's relationship with her husband [Raúl Castillo] and her eldest daughter [Mileiah Vega]. This pulp thriller lacks credibility and consequently has a bizarre ending. It's worth watching at most for the acting duel between Winstead and Monroe.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

A family hires a seemingly perfect nanny, but it soon becomes apparent that her intentions are anything but innocent.

This is a rather tame and predictable thriller that unfortunately offers little to the viewer. While I only vaguely remember the original, which I rated significantly higher at 3.5 stars at the time, this remake failed to truly impress.

The film starts slowly, and while the tension gradually builds, a true climax is elusive. The predictable plot, the usual clichés, and a few illogical choices kept me from truly being on the edge of my seat. However, the homey setting and the atmosphere were well-crafted.

The film's highlight lies in the excellent performances by Monroe and Winstead. Both bring out the best in their roles and give the film just that little bit of conviction that's lacking elsewhere. However, I found Monroe's performance a bit too tame. Unfortunately, the chemistry between Morales and Winstead is lacking, making their dynamic less believable.

This remake is therefore a missed opportunity and adds little new. It's a film that's otherwise competently executed, but due to predictability, clichés, and a few illogical choices, never truly becomes exciting.

2.5 stars.

A mediocre film about a couple who hire a woman to help with their two children. A loose remake of the eponymous film from 1992. It's rather leisurely in its construction, making it a bit dull at times. It's generally less exciting and entertaining than the original. Well-cast and well-acted, though.
