Nowadays they mainly broadcast The Asylum junk to appeal to horror fans, but at the beginning of the new millennium they also sometimes broadcast fun films. Last night while digging through my TV film drawer, we came across this film of which I still had some pretty good memories. It goes without saying that The Guardian is somewhat outdated in terms of special effects and the plot is paper thin, but there is still more than enough to enjoy.

The script of a forest nymph who sacrifices babies to a tree god is one that I have not encountered before in horror films, and the film also has a perfect combination of atmosphere and, at times, quite excessive gore. The contrast of this works wonderfully. Unfortunately, outside Seagrove there are few actors and actresses who really intrigue. I don't understand how someone like Roger Ebert sees this as one of his most hated films, I certainly miss the days when these horror films were broadcast at night.

This was bad! You usually expect more quality from Friedkin than such nonsensical rubbish. The man made The Exorcist, which is considered one of the best horror films ever! After The Guardian I have to conclude that The Exorcist may have been a fluke for Friedkin. The Guardian tries to be original by integrating fairytale elements (evil wolves, wood nymphs, pagan sacrifices). But it's done so poorly that it doesn't make any sense. Moreover, the acting is also terrible. In some scenes with the forest setting and the flying nanny I thought of the more recent and much better The VVitch.

Mediocre film about a couple who hire a nanny for their baby. A thin story that doesn't really captivate. The acting is also of a varying level. But the film does contain a few nice horror scenes with excellent special effects (including a nice, bloody finale).
