There is plenty of atmosphere in this somber and, above all, grim story about a young widower (Tom Hughes) trying to make a fresh start on an island off the Scottish coast. If you enjoy desolate landscapes and underlying tension, you will certainly get your money's worth here, but the film feels a bit too distant and slow to me. Additionally, there are too few genuinely scary moments, causing attention to repeatedly waver. Ultimately, it is well acted and exemplarily put together, but not distinctive enough within the genre.

Impressive.

An atmospheric, completely surprising film from our English neighbors. I hadn't immediately associated this country with horror films that fully embrace a gloomy atmosphere. In that regard, Shepherd is a more than pleasant surprise; the opening, in particular, makes it immediately clear what kind of film to expect.

It is refreshing to see directors still able to commit to an atmospheric horror film without it losing itself in an unstable pace or awkward choices. The film does frequently make stylistic choices that are somewhat larger than necessary, but otherwise, I have very little to complain about in terms of horror. Incredibly strong soundtrack, sharp focus, and world-creation that commands respect.

The acting, coming from a cast that is surprisingly not even all that unknown, can also be called solid. The film only loses sight of itself somewhat during the middle section, where the drama is pulled more to the foreground. I also found some horror ideas somewhat poorly executed, such as the final demon, but once the finale arrives, we are guaranteed some ominous goings-on.

It's a shame that this film isn't appreciated as much on a large scale, but that was to be expected. Films like Shepherd really target a specific audience that enjoys movies heavily focused on a specific type of horror. This kind of film can easily leave me cold, but I found this one cleverly put together with an excellent eye for atmosphere. Nice.

Powerful film!

A dark gem that might not be everyone's cup of tea. The film is quite slow and has a hefty dose of drama. Personally, I didn't experience the film as slow at all, and the combination of horror and drama worked excellently for me. The incredibly atmospheric cinematography and the constantly present soundscapes make it particularly immersive and creepy. That lighthouse clock, striking again and again... 8.5/10*
