A very decent seventies horror, this mix between The Tell Tale Heart, Repulsion and The Omen.

Macabre atmosphere and a good dose of sadism in a film that doesn't really have to rely on its appearance (boring 70s mediocrity), but the soundtrack works well.

And some brilliant shock moments.

Also a surprising scene with a snap-off knife.

There's gore in it too, not a lot, but at those moments it's effective.

It falls a little short of Dario Argento's masterpieces, but fans should definitely check out this attempt at something similar from the older horror meister.

My first Bava, and Bava's last. Apparently, he was a master of Italian horror. I didn't really care for it.

The acting was particularly poor, and that kid was especially annoying at times. The story isn't bad, it's just that little is done with it. It focuses more on the drama than on the suspense. The tension was quite present at times, but is then completely destroyed by the loud and terrible music. There's an occasional nice shot, but otherwise it's very standard and dull. The psychological aspect comes through well now and then, but is then marred by the acting, which simply doesn't come across well. You could say that Shock fails miserably in the finishing touches, and therefore never becomes very exciting. However, the final scene makes up for a lot. There, the wonderful underlying tension is very good, and the climax is definitely worth it.

2*

I still quite enjoyed this Bava. David Colin Jr. is almost exasperating, especially at the beginning, as the son of Daria Nicolodi's character. Fortunately, they manage to rectify this before the film's halfway point, and Colin Jr. even proves to be a serious threat.

The trick then is to make it terrifying for the viewer, and I have to say Bava succeeds quite well. Fortunately, Nicolodi and John Steiner play their roles solidly.

The soundtrack is also quite good, and one might immediately think of Goblin, but the artists are different this time. It's clear where the inspiration comes from, and the only thing that stands out is the mixing in of "vintage video game sounds" towards the end.

Bava proves that you don't always need gore and/or a lot of violence to make an effective horror film.
