Separate.

Hadn't really looked for this behind McTiernan, although the switch via Predator to Die Hard is not so strange in retrospect. This film hovers somewhere between mystery, thriller and horror, but never really convinces.

Still, it remains separate enough to hold the interest. The mystery is solid, but the execution leaves something to be desired. For example, Brosnan is completely insufferable with his sad fake accent. The music is also a serious distraction. Not really surprising since this is a mid-80s film, but you have to have a soft spot for that era to appreciate this soundtrack.

Film floats on a bit, the interest was there, but McTiernan does little with it. In any case, it is not a real thoroughbred horror, it works a lot better as a mystery. It's just a pity that the film itself doesn't get that far.

1.5*

Let me just have a soft spot for the 80ties..

Other than that, I agree with the previous comment, although I do give the film a higher rating. The film doesn't really know what it wants to be, so the mix of genres never really comes into its own. And Pierce Brosnan's fake accent is indeed terrible, but those are the two main flaws. Except maybe the lack of tension; here the director misses an opportunity.

Because there is nothing wrong with the set-up and the story: this is not a 13-in-a-dozen supernatural story for once, but a good attempt to bring something original. The modern urban nomads, based on an Eskimo myth, are pretty freaky. The narrative structure, about a main character who, thanks to hallucinations, "experiences" another's last days and eventually ends up in the same misery, appeals.

The overall alienating atmosphere is intriguing. Often very dreamy, interspersed with rawer scenes and 80s rock. Much is not explained, although the admittedly strong ending is not very surprising. It is a pity that the film is not constant enough, so that you as a viewer are too often taken out of the story. A little more could have been done here, because now it's stuck at just a pass. 3***

Mediocre film in which an anthropologist moves to Los Angeles and gets into trouble with a gang. A somewhat messy story which also results in a rather long-winded film. Mysterious and sometimes quite atmospheric (partly due to the soundtrack). But otherwise, this directorial debut by John McTiernan is not very much.
