Man in Black plot
Henry Clavering suspects his second wife Bertha and daughter of trying to drive his daughter from his first marriage insane in order to prevent her from inheriting his money later. The poor girl's only true friend is also one of the few people her father trusts: the often-drunk yet loyal overseer Hodges. Henry decides to pretend he's dead in order to expose Bertha.
