Victoria [Megan Charpentier] and her younger sister Lilly [Isabelle Nélisse] managed to survive in the wilderness for a long time after the death of their parents. The judge appoints their uncle Lucas [Nikolaj Coster-Waldau] as guardian, something his wife Annabel [Jessica Chastain] does not want. Still, Annabel does her best to help the girls get used to a 'normal' life, but soon the feeling comes over her that the "mom" Victoria and Lilly are talking about is not a figment, but an evil creature who probably likes her. has coined. Teen horror isn't horror, but Muschietti at least provides a few terrifying moments leading up to melodramatic denouement. Chastain, Charpentier and Nélisse are also convincing and Javier Botet deserves a compliment for his physical contribution as the Mama from the title.

Oh well...I like horror movies and keep it short.

Weak story, poorly developed and visually hideous.

Doesn't make sense of all that mama, but she couldn't fascinate me so much that I don't even need to know. Absolutely no chemistry between all the actors which doesn't make it any better. I like that rock chick, it's just that haircut that annoys me. Shame on that pretty woman.

If you think it couldn't get any worse.. yes! The end! The little reputation that could be saved became a disaster. That mama looks so bad and ridiculous it's hilarious. Expected more from Toro.

Mama starts off quite atmospheric and certainly knows how to arouse interest in the first half hour. The intro music evoked a dark fairytale vibe, and the cinematography and images also match that atmosphere. Andy Muschietty directs extremely skilfully, and the influence of Del Toro is visible on several levels. After that first half hour, however, the film falls into very standard practices, and you are simply dealing with a ghost film. It isn't portrayed badly anywhere, but it is very diminutive, and Muschietty relies heavily on bland jumpscares. The ending goes overboard, and doesn't really close the film strong. Moreover, the excellent cast is not fully utilized. Jessica Chastain's character is written a bit oddly into the story, and the ever-great Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is simply brushed aside for most of the movie. That's a shame, because they are fine actors, who couldn't do too much with this script. The film does get a pass, if only for the well-cared-for technical side. For Muschietty clearly a warm-up towards It, where he could work with a better script/story-technical foundation. 3*.
