It had been The Haunting since I'd seen a horror movie in black and white, and I have to admit it's something special. If done right, it definitely adds value. Black Sunday is a fascinating witch/vampire film that mainly relies on a solid story and beautiful gothic sets. No floating undead, sharp teeth or bleeding necks, just sober cinema.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the good acting performances, although the dubbing unfortunately detracts from that, and the subtle but efficient gore moments (considering the year).

Yet as a viewer in 2006 you need more than that to really shiver with fear.

Conclusion: Given the austerity and the age of the film, perhaps not food for the masses, but definitely recommended for the seasoned horror fanatic. Moreover, Black Sunday is a film that can easily compete with genre classics such as Dracula and Frankenstein.

Wonderful horror film by Mario Bava.

The look of the movie is beautiful. Rarely have I seen such a beautiful black and white film; it really gives the film an added value that would have been lost if the film had been shot in color. The sets are breathtakingly beautiful and the constant fog that envelops these sets gives everything that fantastic creepy atmosphere.

The story is not special, but some very strong individual scenes more than make up for it. I think the strongest is the moment when the doctor's blood ends up on Barbara Steele's corpse and the eyes and skin slowly regenerate. The film also contains a pretty brutal scene in which the mask is slapped on Steele's face, one of the best scares of the film.

Furthermore, the film takes its time and the viewer has time to enjoy the visual splendor. but the end of the film is nice and spectacular, and although the exaggerated happy ending comes across as a bit forced, it is definitely a nice ending to this extremely atmospheric film.

Watched the Green Cow DVD today and I have to say that I am once again very pleased with the great gothic setting that Bava can create (as in his equally strong "The Whip and the Body"). I generally have less with black and white films, but with this one it made an effective contribution. Especially in the scene in which a dead man rises from his grave it creates a mysterious atmosphere.
Furthermore, the attention to the sets and costumes, etc. can almost be compared to the better Hammer work. Steele attracts the most attention because of her beauty, which she knows how to combine with fearfulness. Very well played.
Highly recommended for fans of gothic (Euro) horrors.
