Starring the lovely Ariana DeBose, who plays a chef who makes her dream come true. She opens her own restaurant in a somewhat dilapidated building in the countryside. And of course, that doesn't go as planned. DeBose gives shape to a character who is completely absorbed in her profession and her dream. Her passion is so intense that she loses all perspective and control. About herself. About the restaurant. In no time at all, the self-confident chef is reduced to a bundle of nerves that is on the verge of sinking into total tension.

The mental decline is a bit exciting. You keep wondering how far DeBose can sink. How much can she endure? Actually, House of Sopils is much more of a psychological drama with some supernatural elements than a horror film. The contribution of the supernatural is also rather brief. The supernatural aspect flickers here and there without growing into something fundamental. Without growing into something that has a real influence on the atmosphere in the film. That is rather sterile. Just like the story, which progresses without any special highlights.

The story concerns itself with the cook and her endeavors, and it does so without investing much in the character.

The interactions between the characters remain on the superficial side. It does not fizz. The events do not fizz either. Exciting-sounding beginnings never blossom. For example, somewhere in the film the theme of witchcraft is touched upon and there is hope for an exciting development in that direction. Unfortunately, that theme is not continued consistently and the hope quickly fades. House of Spoils is a film that does not use its narrative potential. House of Spoils is one of those films that does not necessarily pass by unpleasantly, but where afterwards you can no longer remember what it was that passed by.

Unpredictable, but rather tame combination of horror and drama with very unsympathetic characters. Directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy focus on a creative concept and use a drawn-out structure to colour it in, but can barely hide the fact that the build-up is rather slow and not always very interesting. Ariana DeBose fails to convey the stress and urgency of her situation to the viewer, which ultimately only makes her come across as an annoying and unjust figure. Arian Moayed and Barbie Ferreira don't add much either and although the film has a number of nice concepts towards the end, it remains somewhat boring overall. The well-thought-out camera work and neat cinematography earn some bonus points, but that's about it.
