Hellions plot

"This Halloween, Hell Comes Knocking"

It's Halloween night in the town of Waterford, the so-called pumpkin capital of the world. Dora Vogel is home alone and faces a long night. Among the children who go door-to-door, a group of masked demonic creatures roam unnoticed, knocking on the unsuspecting Dora's door. Before long, she's cut off from the outside world and besieged in her own home for reasons she doesn't understand. Only in the dark will she have to defend her body and soul against the evil creatures known as hellions.

Halloween, children and an ancient curse.

Sounds exciting and scary. And at times the film is.

The story takes place under a full moon. A blood moon, no less. To accentuate the blood moon, a purple filter has been poured over the film. It immediately gives the film a psychedelic and atmospheric touch. Quite nice and it is not even boring to watch.

The special effects are decent. Not too shocking or gruesome. Just ok.

The children ringing the doorbell and the silent children create the creepy atmosphere. Very simply directed, but the effect is maximal. The children come across as very creepy and unpleasant.

The film does not have a clear ending. It is an ending that is open to multiple interpretations.

And yes, you have to like that. I'm okay with it.

The acting is not that great by the way. That is the big downside of this quite pleasant film.

Sometimes a bit amateurish, but ultimately perfect.

The concept also feels nice and old-fashioned and works very well, and the director seems to be very creative in this. We follow Dora, a very beautiful sight ( ) who is home alone on Halloween night. The candy is ready for the "trick or treat" children, but unfortunately that does not remain innocent. Dora eventually gets a few brazen little bastards at the door with very strange masks. What first started as brazenly brazen turns up to a rather supernatural and creepy spectacle. And yes, Dora apparently has a devil in her womb after unsafe sex, which is very popular with the creepy sectarian inhuman-looking children. But it goes even further.

Quite unexpectedly we are thrown into a hallucinatory trip and the colour filters and the weirdness manage to really strengthen the whole thing, which may have had a bit of a start-up problem in the beginning. Some scenes reminded me a bit of Visions of Suffering. What I also found quite remarkable was that this time, for a change, the visions did not only take place in Dora's head but that the local police officer also quickly realised that something supernatural was going on, which he had never seen before. Then add a bit of a Rambo chick factor and the whole thing managed to work well. The film also managed to remain good enough to send shivers down your spine. Some things were really gross (that monstrosity, eating a foetus) The ending (and the walk towards it) was also very oppressive, even though you could almost guess what would happen next.

Very nice movie. Too bad it is so underrated here.

Better revision. Director Bruce McDonald explicitly seeks out original angles and delivers an unusual horror thriller with Hellions, in which the content is increasingly pushed into the background as the playing time progresses. In addition, a rather dreamy atmosphere is set after about 30 minutes, in which the use of color in particular stands out positively. Not every visual idea is effective given the bareness of some scenes, but it remains unpredictable and special. The acting is not great, the tension could have been considerably increased and the eventual hellions are not special threats, but McDonald still manages to keep the film interesting and provide it with enough idiosyncrasy. I personally can appreciate that there are still horror films being released that try to do something different and also have enough resources to be able to do so.
