Hmm, nice! Misty, night-time film sets with blue-painted dead and exploding goldfish. Fine (supernatural) 80's horror. Perhaps a bit 'sparsely' filled, but with a huge amount of atmosphere and the necessary nudity/seduction. Perhaps a bit too tame to really end up high, but in any case a fine traditional film.

Hellgate is a horror film from the tail end of the 80s, but a few minor flaws prevent it from being an essential film.

The special effects were actually quite nice. The highlights were the exploding goldfish and the strangely creepy reanimated turtle. The mist-shrouded sets were also nice, but not enough to make the slow story really interesting. The concept was quite nice, but it quickly became rudderless.

The characters are probably the most annoying I've seen in a long time. They make bad jokes, talk to each other with bizarrely long pauses, and make the most insane decisions. Those acting skills were also due to the fact that the film was not made in the US at all, but in South Africa.

The most fascinating thing about the film for me was the appearance of Abigail Wolcott as the gorgeous, seductive Josie. She spoke in the same strange way and tone as the rest of them at times, but that gave her an innocent, mysterious quality. She had beautiful, penetrating blue eyes that were made even more beautiful by the white make-up. She also had a beautiful body and was not afraid to show it off.

But Wolcott was really one of the few highlights in an otherwise mediocre '80s product. Because while '80s horror may be one of my favorite genres, mediocre is mediocre...

Two men and two women in a ghost town where every stranger is shot by the father of a cursed young woman. Another danger lurks in a luminous crystal that can bring the dead back to life. An object that, instead of creating a sinister atmosphere, mainly creates an atmosphere in which the funny muscles can be fully utilized. For example, there is a scene with a goldfish that is hilarious while it should probably be experienced as terrifying. The same cheerfulness came over me during a scary scene with an aggressive turtle. And fortunately there were more moments that looked away cheerfully.

Hellgate is not a good film and it is best to just suffer all the misery that passes by with a laugh. In Hellgate stupid, boring and pointless things happen. Sometimes nothing happens at all. The tension is hard to find. The acting is bad. The special effects are laughable and could just as well not have been used. Not entirely true. One scene is quite okay and is a positive surprise in the film. It is about a bloody strangulation that provides a nice bit of gore.

As befits a film from the 80s, there is still a bit of nudity to be seen. Given the level of the film, you would expect tastelessness or nudity from the category of cow udders, but that is not the case. The nudity is actually much too refined for a film like Hellgate and is actually a second pleasant surprise. Furthermore, Hellgate is a terrible film. Stupid story. Bad acting. No atmospheric camera work. It is all a pity. Fortunately, there is something to laugh about.
