Harbinger Down plot

"Terror is just beneath the surface"

A group of students have booked a crossing on the ship Harbinger to study the effects of global warming in the Bering Sea. When the crew brings on board a recently thawed Soviet space wreck, everyone on the ship is in mortal danger. The Russians appear to have experimented in the past with resistant organisms that can withstand space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without undergoing mutation. Now the Harbinger's crew is exposed to these mutating creatures, who have no intention of giving up the warm company of humans.

The Thing II: Harbinger Down.

In fact, this directorial debut of Gillis is nothing more than a big fuck you towards the (second) Thing remake from 2011. A film that already angered the crowd before its release. CGI?! It will never be the same as the real deal. Not when it comes to these kinds of slimy alien/creature flicks. This Harbinger Down is often described as a mix between the Thing and Leviathan (1989) (coincidentally a film in which Gillis also worked on the special effects). It seems appropriate to me.

With Lance H. and the show-off with the practical effects you already have a title that tries (almost desperately) to distinguish itself. In terms of script and characters it doesn't succeed, but for those looking for some old school alien slime: you've come to the right place. Great effects, but unfortunately still too often masked by the dark setting. Could have been a bit more explicit in the image, but you can see that there are quite a few nice pieces in between.

Also reminded me a bit of the Alien/Thing rip-offs from the 80s. Also full of worthless, simple characters and (good!) slimy props. Awesomely cheesy! Think of The Terror Within (1989) , Forbidden World (1982) etc.. This Harbinger Down can also be approached in the same way, but at the same time it is slick designed. I hope this will be a bit of a hit here on MM.

Low budget rip-off of The Thing that still comes quite far purely on goodwill. Unfortunately, after a reasonable start, the film gradually gets worse, resulting in an entertaining but substandard horror film. Fortunately, Lance Henriksen's furrowed face in one of the leading roles makes up for a few things and the make-up effects are occasionally quite okay, albeit not very original.

Definitely not as bad as the average score here would lead you to believe.

Harbinger Down is a nice atmospheric film that, as mentioned, has all the similarities with The Thing. Not a very big budget, but everything that is shown looks convincing enough. The special effects are quite nice. The kills themselves are unfortunately sometimes filmed a bit too messy. In addition, part of the cast acts very mediocre. Lance Henriksen is of course a nice face to have around.

Great movie for once. Quite ambitious and therefore also to be praised. There are countless worse horror movies made that get higher scores here on MovieMeter.
