Robert Hall does not learn from the mistakes he made in the first part. In fact, he is going backwards.

Chromeskull itself still has the appearance of a bag of mashed potatoes. In addition, there is again too little dark humor and too little tension. Only that scene where Chromeskull and the blind girl are together in that dark cellar is very strong. Besides that, it all feels so uncoordinated, as if everything was improvised on the spot. Characters remain piece by piece of cardboard and that whole team that works with Chromeskull only makes the whole concept more lame. Danielle Harris has a small supporting role, one that will be immediately forgotten.

What's opposite? Fairly good gore, but even that loses power in several scenes due to excessive use of CGI. The film just wants to be too brutal and hardcore, but in my opinion it just fails.

A lot less than its predecessor. Very very simple chopping and butchering that manages to impress very little. The killer remains an unprecedented douchebag and the film lacks its own face. All very atmospheric too. If I look at it that way, a 2.5* is still generous.

In this second part, the killer named Chromeskull continues as before. Lots of kills. Lots of blood. Lots of gore. Another nice thing is the story. Unlike the first film, the story hardly slows down and has a faster pace. It is also nice that more background is given to the figure Chromeskull. Contours become clearer.
In terms of content, the story is still not strong. The story may have more direction and the actions run more smoothly, but that does not alter the fact that the filling in of the white areas from the first film does not make much of an impression. The film uses many uninteresting characters and weak plot twists that cause events to spread far too widely. The core of the story (being Chromeskull and his kills) gets a bit out of sight. The story goes off the rails and is even a bit ridiculous at times.
I would rather see intensification and deepening than broadening. Just a simple concise story with a killer and victims. Surrounded by well-filled characters, a good dose of psychology and an amount of twists that pleasantly surprises. The film is chronically lacking in those things.
Acting technically, the film does not make much progress compared to the firstling. A big plus is that Bobbi Sue Luther will not return for the lead role. Her replacement Allison Kyler (who by the way doesn't last very long) doesn't look very spectacular either, but at least she acts a bit better.
Anyway. The film is mainly about the mutilations and the kills. They look good. The fantastic make-up and the fantastic effects guarantee a lot of viewing pleasure in that respect.

Sequel to a pretty mediocre first part. You often think you're going a bit harder and grander with a sequel, but Hall is actually directing exactly the same film again. Only this time with the next bunch of uninteresting characters. Principe returns to play the same boring killer, this ChromeSkull. It is actually very special how with such a film you bet double and thick on extra brutal murders and then let this crass cow do it. Dumb mask and no threat whatsoever. Fortunately, Hall has not dropped the ball in terms of violence and is still pushing extra hard with the kills. They are therefore remarkably mean and brutal, but it doesn't matter who dies because they are all just interchangeable characters. In any case, such basic data is no longer possible. A group of monotonous police officers, a group of boring victims and some randomly registered people to kill each other in between and also work a serious story around it. You just have to dare. All in all, the total lack of visual interpretation and substantive creativity kills a quite potential film like Laid to Rest. Always a pity.
