A decent horror movie. Story about a number of people who die and it seems as if they have committed suicide, but were murdered in their dream. A link with A Nightmare on Elm Street was quickly made, but that's really where the comparison ends. This doesn't focus on gore, although it does have its gory moments, but focuses more on mystery. And that mystery is strongly represented and very successful in that respect. The story is also somewhat reminiscent of, for example, The Ring and Phone, but despite that, this film will certainly not be boring. The manner in which the victims occur is spectacularly detailed. The camera work is a bit confusing, but in this case it makes the attack a lot more exciting. Unfortunately, the film lacks some tension and is ultimately nothing more than decent.

A film that only Tsukamoto can make, I think. It is clear that the scenario borrows from A Nightmare on Elm Street, although the effect is so different that it does not bother. In any case, it is also presented a lot more depressingly and that improves the atmosphere and tension. The icy cinematography reinforces the gloomy character of this picture and makes the surreal scenes even that little bit more surreal, and therefore scarier. Close-ups, cold colors and the idiosyncratic way in which architecture (apartment buildings, narrow tunnels) and characters (printed faces) are depicted are Tsukamoto's trademark. He reinforces the story with his visual language. A downside is the explanatory ending, something you also see in Haze and Vital. Sometimes it is better to let the images speak for themselves - after all, he does that perfectly - and leave the interpretation to the viewer. But it is certain that Nightmare Detective is a lot better than your average J-horror.

Director Shin'ya Tsukamoto started his career in an extremely interesting and experimental way, which makes a film like Nightmare Detective somewhat disappointing. The visual interpretation looks bare, the camera work is too neat and the build-up of tension is virtually absent. What remains is an interesting concept and reasonably acted main characters, but that is not nearly enough to completely lift the film as a whole. One single scene does stand out, when that agent is chased in his dream by a deformed threat. These are moments where the film suddenly comes alive, which often made me wonder why Tsukamoto himself didn't seem to do that. to see. As the final phase progresses, the level increases somewhat, but it simply comes too late to compensate for the first hour.
