When the Second World War comes to an end, many Nazis flee their homeland. Including the notorious Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. Like many others, he moves to South America. He manages to live the rest of his life in freedom and eventually dies in Brazil in 1979.

The numerous time jumps and non-chronological structure sow confusion in this character study in which Josef Mengele (August Diehl) is forced by his son Rolf (Max Bretschneider) to confront his past as a camp doctor in Auschwitz at a late age. The cinematography is magnificent, and Diehl's performance is impressive, even though he mainly rails against being used as a scapegoat, while many colleagues go free and even pursue careers in post-war Germany. This provides interesting insights, but nothing new about Mengele himself.
