King Sejong the Great (1397-1450) was recognized as an outstanding ruler of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea, at least in part because of the remarkable advances in science that took place during his reign. The king valued scientific and technological advances that would help his nation succeed, honoring inventors for their gifts, regardless of the social class they came from. He called on the scientist Jang Yeong-sik, among others. The latter was at first a slave, but his talents eventually earned him a position in the government. This resulted in a 20-year partnership between the two.
