The 19th century, South Africa. Rachel, ten and her younger brother Jamie, six, are passing through the Transvaal with their father Herman, on their way to the areas where gold is mined. He wants to build a new life there, after his wife, who is also the mother of his children, passed away five years ago. When a calf beloved by the kids runs away, Jamie goes after the animal.
