Story constructed with flashbacks within flashbacks, which requires attention but also brings a certain tension.

In any case, it's not too bad, except perhaps at the end where some things remain unresolved and everything is explained quite psychologically.

Still a good black and white film from that period.

Beautiful film noir. Everything seems to be right here. The screenplay is based on Freudian psychoanalysis, but even though it is a film from the mid-20th century, the core idea seems largely credible to me, which is not always the case with these types of films. Naturally, a psychiatrist is involved, played excellently by Brian Aherne. The other male lead is for Robert Mitchum, as the artist and lover of Laraine Day. Nice to see him again. Laraine Day is at the center of the film, as a mentally ill femme fatale, like a few we know from the 1940s. Also for her praise. She comes across as just that little bit crazy and crazy to keep it believable.

Furthermore, a beautifully shot film by John Brahm and cinematographer Nicolas Musuraca. Both are or were tops in their profession, and we get pictures to die for; chiaroscuro, low angles, dolly shots that show a progression of time... I have not yet reached the end of the hymn. Let me also involve RKO's resident composer. He always provides reliably effective scores and this is no different. Although he did surprise me positively with his version of The Wedding March, which evolves brilliantly in dissonance.
As befits such expertly shot films, they end with a very symbolic shot that in this case expresses hope for Laraine Day's character, for whom things may turn out well.
A film that captivated me from beginning to end, and in which I was introduced for the first time to a flashback within a flashback within a flashback.

Nancy is about to get married, but just before the wedding her husband is visited by a man who claims to be her ex-husband, but that's not all.
This is followed by a flashback and another to tell the entire backstory about Nancy, unfortunately it is not that much, one attempt is made to explain her kleptomania for expensive jewelry, but actually that is a somewhat meager explanation for her obsession .
Furthermore, the story is well put together, but the ending is rather mediocre.
Not only is the murder never solved, it is also very easy to see her as a victim with all the pity, especially when you consider that her first boyfriend committed suicide partly because of her.
