Holy smoke what a hit this movie is! Tight script and ditto tempo, sharp dialogues, the voice-over of a chain-smoking Bogart, an endless series of twists, murder & mystery all over the place. As far as I'm concerned, Lizabeth Scott succeeds in creating the perfect femme fatale: she literally sets the tone with a seductive song (that sultry husky voice!) has the looks and the kind of charisma that makes you, as a viewer, hope against better judgment that she is sincere.

From start to finish I enjoyed this movie to the extent that I hoped it would never end, but alas.

Dead Reckoning was made in 1947, just like Out Of The Past, and is an equal companion for me. I had never heard of director John Cromwell, so maybe it's time to discover other works by him. By the way, this film contains creative visual finds, metaphors, for which hats off.

Dead Reckoning may not often appear in the top lists, but for me this is the ultimate noir.

Good film about two soldiers who travel home after the war to receive an award. A typical film noir with all the right ingredients: a cynical voice-over, a femme fatale and a murder. There is enough momentum in the fairly complicated plot to keep it entertaining. Humprey Bogart is obviously in the right place here.

I've seen better noirs with Bogart, I was happy with the english subtitle because it was indeed quite a messy story but still entertaining enough to keep watching.
Bogart is otherwise doing well and his in-car dialogue with Scott shrinking and pocketing his wife is funny.
Not top noir but certainly not bad either.
