Very nice film, based on true events.

The investigation into the truth is drawn out at length, but that was certainly not distracting, on the contrary, and the fact that the ending is ultimately somewhat rounded off is something we are used to from such films from that period.

Thus delivered very clearly and distinctly with very fluent lyrics which, coming from a James Stewart in real form, are even more to the point and gain in power... "And if I had to learn Polish to find her, I'd start right away" and, when it needs to be refuted, "A long time ago people believed the world was flat..." I hear him say it this way, the man who once explained his presence on the stage in his well-known laconic style at an Inauguration Gala on the occasion of the election of President Reagan, "I'm here to present the Old Hollywood."

A good film noir about a man innocently imprisoned, after which a reporter battles the system to get him out. It's always a pleasure to watch James Stewart at work, and this one is no different. This film boasts some beautiful location shots in Chicago, courtesy of cinematographer Joe McDonald. The story unfolds at a brisk pace under Henry Hathaway's excellent direction. The documentary style reminds me of Hitchcock's The Wrong Man (which was, admittedly, made a few years later).

A lesser-known film, but definitely recommended for fans of murder & mystery in the noir tradition.

Captivating and compelling. It reminds me somewhat of John Grisham adaptations. A journalist dredges up a more than ten-year-old conviction of a man serving life imprisonment for the murder of a police officer, and begins to believe he's innocent. The inventor of the lie detector himself also demonstrates his device. The ending is rather clumsily executed, but you often saw that in films from that era. Stewart is brilliant again as the journalist who sinks his teeth into the case like a pit bull.
