This film consists of eight short stories. 1. Sunshine Through The Rain: A little boy is told not to go outside when it rains and the sun shines because that's when the foxes are celebrating their wedding feasts, which could have fatal consequences for those who see this. 2. The Peach Orchard: The same little boy encounters the ghosts of peach trees that have been knocked down by heartless people. 3. The Blizzard: A group of mountaineers are rescued during a snowstorm by spiritual intervention. 4. The Tunnel: A man encounters the ghosts of an army platoon for whose death he is responsible. 5. Crows: An art student meets Vincent van Gogh and enters a world of his paintings. 6. Mount Fuji in Red: Nuclear 'meltdown' threatens to destroy Japan. 7. The Weeping Demon: An image of a 'post-bomb' world inhabited by human mutations. 8. Village of the Watermills: A cheerful portrait about a village in which the population is one with nature.

Count you all lucky I didn't watch this one. I therefore wisely withhold my vote.
I do believe that Kitano got his inspiration for Dolls here, only Kitano knows how to use his colors well. Admittedly there were some nice shots in the second segment, but the rest was really more kitsch than art. The poster scene, praised by Ramon, is just about the best example of the first three fragments (I stopped halfway through the fourth). Lots of colours, but the flower carpet reminded me of those granny gardens where you find the most raunchy flower combinations together. The parody that Miike brings to this scene in Katakuris says it all.
Fortunately, the second part was a bit better, although the music kept going to the marrow and the close-ups of the costumes (in contrast to the green grass) in particular were aesthetically wrong.
I normally like these kinds of films, but I really can't call this visually or musically beautiful. Complete let down in my opinion compared to Kitano's Dolls and Suzuki's Pistol Opera.

A film, divided into 8 short stories. I'm never a big fan of that, because it's often hard to get a consistent level no matter how good a director may be.
Dreams also has a bit to do with that problem. Let me first say that I thought it was a special film, with a few very nice chapters, but also a few chapters that are slightly less interesting. In any case, the themes of death and dealing with nature emerge emphatically.
Chapters 4, 6 and 7 were clearly less so. Also the main reason, by the way, why I can't give it four stars. Personal favorites for me were chapters 1, 5 and 8. The first chapter is beautifully designed with a combination of beautiful colors. In chapter 5 about van Gogh, I especially enjoyed seeing how the protagonist was absorbed in the world of the painting. The last chapter stands out for its cheerfulness, looks very nice and has very nice and fresh music. A great ending to a good omnibus.
Dreams is definitely worth seeing. Still, I prefer to see a film as a whole, or at least divided into slightly fewer segments. This may be just a little too much of a good thing. Anyway, Dreams has managed to fascinate me, visually has a number of beautiful moments, opens strongly and closes strongly. Some stories I would also like to dream about at night.

What a dragon of a movie this was. Often visually quite beautiful, also that use of color, but sometimes also very kitschy. But very slow, the content of the film did not interest me and I looked more at ideas (for my feeling) than actually a film or story. The fact that this sometimes really seemed like a stage performance (especially the first two short films) does not help either. But Kurosawa also just makes wrong choices. That last video is visually beautiful (nice to see a Kurosawa with a man in jeans anyway, I especially know his films from the older years) with that green-blue water (and those credits!) And those wonderful sounds of the babbling brook. But for a large part of that piece we hear an old man muttering some wisdom. Boringly portrayed and all that distracts from the natural beauty and tranquility. And that is a good summary of the entire film that is often beautiful but never touched me and all the more often did not hold the attention. 1.5*.
